2015 Golden Globe Predictions: Best Comedy Series

Indiewire’s TV Critic Ben Travers and Awards Editor Peter Knegt will provide regular updates on the Golden Globe races leading up to the ceremony on January 11 at 8pm ET.

It’s a woman’s world, and we’re just living in it. The Golden Globes made a powerful statement about women in television with its nominees in the comedy category. Four of the five nominated shows were created by women. What does that say about who will win? Not much, but it doesn’t bode well for the boys club.

“Silicon Valley” certainly has its fans, but the Mike Judge-created HBO comedy lost some steam toward the end of its brief eight-episode first season. More importantly, the dialogue around this category will be dominated by progress, making it hard to imagine most voters choosing a show represented almost exclusively by white males. Though “Girls” is the only series to return to this category from last year, its inclusion seems like its reward after a mixed third season.

That leaves newcomers “Jane the Virgin” and “Transparent” along with comedy newcomer “Orange is the New Black” (Netflix submitted the freshman season as a drama last year). All three have legitimate shots at the title, and they also all carry detriments to their cause. “Jane the Virgin” is a hot rookie no one expected to make the cut — can it carry that momentum to the finish line? “Transparent” marks the first nomination for Amazon Studios, and it’s unclear whether or not they know how to compete with the big boys in awards season. “Orange is the New Black” sports an impressive three nominations, but can it win the Globe after losing the Emmy?
