Production I.G. To Qualify "Giovanni's Island" For Oscar Nomination

Production I.G. will open Giovanni‘s Island, an acclaimed anime feature directed by Mizuho Nishikubo (animation director of Ghost In The Shell), on Friday, November 7th at the Laemmle Town Center 5 in Encino.

This hand-drawn animated feature is based on true events, centering on the friendship of a Japanese boy and a Soviet girl subsequent to the onset of World War II. Winner of the Jury Distinction and nominee for Best Feature prizes at the 2014 Annecy International Animated Film Festival, this exclusive Los Angeles County engagement will position the film in competition for an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature.

Here’s the trailer:

Synopsis: In the aftermath of World War II, the tiny island of Shikotan became part of the Sakhalin Oblast… and on this forgotten border in a remote corner of the world, friendship among children from two different countries, Japan and the Soviet Union, timidly blossomed, striving to overcome language barriers and the waves of history.
