This January, the Criterion Collection will be adding four diverse films to their list of classic titles. The new releases represent filmmakers from all over the globe with Rainer Werner Fassbinder from Germany, Lucrecia Martel from Argentina, Guy Maddin from Canada, and Preston Sturges from the US.
Fassbinder’s “The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant” is a dark exploration of doomed obsession helmed by a stellar all-female cast. “La Cienaga,” the story of a decaying bourgeois clan, marks Lucrecia Martel’s highly-praised directorial debut. Guy Maddin’s “My Winnipeg” is a quasi-documentary that tells the story of his titular hometown in Canada. Finally, from Preston Sturges comes “The Palm Beach Story,” a wacky screwball comedy that follows misfortunes of one New York married couple.
The Criterion Collection is also re-releasing the samurai classic “The Sword of Doom” in January for a special Blu-ray edition. All titles will be available with special features on Blu-ray and DVD in January 2015.
