Trailer Watch: Katie Holmes is a Captivating Female Vigilante in 'Miss Meadows'

Star vehicles are rarely so tailor-made for a lead actor’s strengths as Miss Meadows is for Katie Holmes, who gets to be both fun and scary in writer-director Karen Leigh Hopkins’ indie drama.

Holmes, whose career has languished for the past few years, hints at wounded depths and barely suppressed rage — two emotions we’ve haven’t seen too much from her — as a chirpy-voiced, primly dressed “Pulp Fiction Mary Poppins” determined to keep children safe at any costs.

In an interview with Women and Hollywood, Hopkins revealed that the character of Miss Meadows came to her during a fit of fear and anger: “I’d always thought of myself as a liberal person, but I wondered if we’d completely lost our marbles [feeling empathetic for a real-life child murderer then in the news]. Who, I wondered in my rage, could protect children and not worry about the politically correct gray area?” The badass thing — and the terrifying thing — about vigilantes is that they don’t think too hard about those questions.

Miss Meadows opens November 14.
