Tribeca Film has announced the acquisition of all U.S. rights to “I am Big Bird,” the documentary which chronicles the career of “Sesame Street” puppeteer Caroll Spinney.
Spinney has been a key component of “Sesame Street” for the past 40 years, playing the beloved characters Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch. Directors Dave LaMattina and Chad Walker culled from Spinney’s own home videos and “Sesame Street” archives to weave together the tale of the man who has embodied our childhood icons. Now 80 years old, Spinney still stuffs himself into the famous big yellow suit.
“Big Bird is one of the iconic figures in American television and this portrait of the man inside, Caroll Spinney, is simultaneously joyful and fascinating,” said Tribeca Film GM Todd Green.
“Caroll entrusted us with telling his story and we’re thrilled that we’ll finally be able to share it with audiences across the country,” said director and producer Chad Walker.
Tribeca plans for an early 2015 theatrical and VOD release.
