Watch: Billy Crudup is a Cool Dad in Exclusive 'Rudderless' Clip

William H. Macy has kept his film schedule light for the past few years, and it appears to have been for a good reason. Not only has Macy been headlining the hit Showtime blue-collar family dramedy “Shameless,” in which he plays the selfish, good-for-nothing patriarch of the Gallagher family, but he has also been working on his director debut, “Rudderless.”

Picked up for distribution out of Sundance by Samuel Goldwyn Films and Paramount Home Media Distribution earlier this year, “Rudderless” tells the story of a father who has been devastated by the sudden death of his son. When the father, Sam, happens to come across a box filled with his late son’s demo tapes and lyrics, he decides to learn how to play each song. Sam eventually builds up enough confidence to perform in front of people at a local bar and ends up catching the attention of a young musician named Quentin. Sam and Quentin strike up an unlikely partnership that leads their lives in directions that they had never even dreamed of.

In this exclusive clip from the film, Quentin makes a passionate plea to Sam, imploring him to reconsider his decision to abstain from playing in front of a live audience again. Sam and Quentin are played by Billy Crudup and Anton Yelchin, respectively. Macy’s wife, Felicity Huffman, rounds out the rest of what is an all-star cast, along with Selena Gomez and Laurence Fishburne.

“Rudderless” opens in theaters and will be available on VOD Friday October 17. You can watch the clip in its entirety below:
