Geez, I should probably get in touch with the family a little more often. David Jagernauth—yes, my cousin, in case you’re wondering—won second place at Scriptapalooza four years ago with “Second Born.” I heard he was meeting agents and revising the script, but I never saw this coming. Looks like I owe someone a holiday phone call.
Park Chan-Wook (“Oldboy,” “Stoker“) has signed on to direct “Second Born,” a story set in a futuristic world where consciousness is stored on computer chips and bodies are bought and sold on the black market. And yes, that sounds pretty great, though yes, I’m obviously biased. The screenplay from four years ago also featured a plot about a murdered special agent who is reborn in another man’s body in order to kill a sadistic conspirator, but no word if that’s remained in the drafts since or how it has changed (or not).
Either way, for a screenwriter’s first Hollywood production, you can’t ask for better than Park to develop your movie, with David Lancaster, one of the producers behind “Whiplash” and “Nightcrawler” also involved. So yes, I’m popping a cork of digital champagne, and it looks like I need to get back in touch with the family. For everyone else, Park is returning to sci-fi (his last effort in the genre was “I’m A Cyborg, But That’s OK“) with a project that has lots of potential. [Variety]
