“12 Years a Slave” director Steve McQueen has once again joined forces with New Regency on a heist thriller based on the 1980s ITV miniseries “Widows.”
Created by Lynda La Plante, who is perhaps best known for the long-running British crime procedural “Prime Suspect” starring Helen Mirren, “Widows” tells the story of the widows of four armed-robbers who band together to carry out the robbery that resulted in the death of their husbands.

In a statement issued by New Regency earlier today, President and CEO Brad Weston described McQueen as family. Said Weston: “After the tremendous success and the amazing journey we experienced together on ’12 Years A Slave,’ we formed a true friendship with Steve. He is like family to all of us here at New Regency and we are thrilled he has entrusted us with this project. We can’t wait to collaborate with him once again.”
The film is slated to enter into pre-production before the end of the year.
