If you thought after four seasons the IFC sketch comedy show “Portlandia” may have gotten a little stale, you’re wrong. Still managing to find new and thoughtful ways to satirize some of the more popular urban movements each year, the Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein half-hour comedy is as refreshingly original as when it first asked you to “put a bird on it” back in 2011.
To remind you of this, we’ve got the first trailer for Season 5 below. In it, you’ll spot a few familiar faces, including the Mayor played by Kyle Maclahlan, a fan favorite, as well as many of the series’ best recurring characters, like the owners of the Feminist Bookstore. The trailer also features a score reminiscent of an action thriller or any Hans Zimmer film, amping up the intensity of the sketch comedy show to new heights (and lending the brief bits of absurdity a dramatic backdrop off of which to play).
Variety reports that Seth Meyers, Paul Simon, Parker Posey, Justin Long, Oscar the Grouch, Greta Gerwig, Jane Lynch, Matt Groening, Anna Gunn and Paul Reubens will guest star in Season 5. Steve Buscemi, who appeared on the show as an actor in Seasons 1 and 4, will return as a guest director this year.
“‘Portlandia’s’ characters have always been central to the show, but this season we went deeper into their lives so that viewers can connect with and appreciate them even more,” said Armisen and Brownstein in a statement. “We can’t wait to share their new adventures and what keeps ‘Portlandia’ so special.”
“Portlandia” will return for a 10-episode Season 5 at 10pm on January 8, 2015 on IFC.
