Adopt Films Acquires Emma Thompson's 'Effie Gray'

Adopt Films has acquired distribution rights to Emma Thompson’s 19th century period drama “Effie Gray,” which also marks the Oscar-winning actress’ first original screenplay.

Directed by BAFTA-nominee Richard Laxton (“Him & Her”), the film stars Dakota Fanning as the eponymous former teenage bride of art critic and author John Ruskin (Greg Wise). After the annulment of their six year marriage, Effie goes on to wed the celebrated pre-Raphaelite painter John Everett Millais (Tom Sturridge) and soon becomes his muse and the father of his eight children.

“To bring ‘Effie Gray’ across America, I cannot think of more spirited, tenacious and hard working distributors out there,” said producer Donald Rosenfeld. “In an age of faceless corporate Hollywood, Grady and Lipsky still bring true personality and passion to the motion picture business.”

Adopt Films plans to release “Effie Gray” in early spring 2014.
