After a UK release back in October, Effie Gray will be coming stateside early next year, thanks to distributor Adopt Films.
The annulment of the marriage between prominent art critic John Ruskin and his much younger wife Effie Gray was a scandal in Victorian England, not least because Gray contended that their six-year marriage had never been consummated. Not surprisingly, the outgoing socialite began an affair with one of her husband’s proteges, the pre-Raphaelite painter John Everett Millais, whom she eventually married and had eight children with.
Screenwriter Emma Thompson’s interpretation of Gray’s life stars Dakota Fanning as Effie, the 19-year-old bride kept under lock and key in her new home, until she decides to explore her sexuality, with or without her husband.
Thompson also co-stars, as do Julie Walters, Claudia Cardinale, Robbie Coltraine, and Tom Sturridge.
Adopt Films commented, “Effie Gray is unquestionably the most visually stunning British period piece in recent memory. Its theme of female empowerment is most timely and delicately embroidered within a powerfully moving biopic. It is a great honor, indeed, to collaborate with [producer] Donald [Rosenfeld], [director] Richard [Laxton], Emma, and Dakota on their wildly impressive labor of love.”
