‘Breaking Bad’ Star Krysten Ritter To Play Marvel's 'Jessica Jones'; Mike Colter May Play Luke Cage

Update 12/22: Marvel confirms Mike Colter will play Luke Cage in “Jessica Jones,” and presumably in the developing standalone Netflix show as well.

Sorry, Alexandra Daddario, Teresa Palmer, and Jessica De GouwWhile all three ladies that were in the running for Marvel’s upcoming Netflix show “Jessica Jones,” the studio has found their woman, and it’s someone else. Deadline reports that “Breaking Bad” and “Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23” actress Krysten Ritter got the gig.

Shepherded by executive producer and showrunner Melissa Rosenberg (an Emmy-winning TV writer best known for writing “Twilight” series films ‘New Moon,’ ‘Eclipse,’ and ‘Breaking Dawn’), “Jessica Jones” will be the second in a four-series, Netflix-Marvel deal, with the 13-episode run of “Daredevil” arriving next spring.

Meanwhile, the trade notes that “The Following” star Mike Colter is said to the actor being eyed to play Luke Cage (aka Powerman), the third character in the Marvel/Netflix deal, but he is also expected to have a major role in “Jessica Jones.”

Much less known than most Marvel heroes (and the least known of these four planned shows), Jones is superhero suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. It leads her to drop her costume and begin a detective agency, and she ends up assisting other superheroes. Don’t be surprised if this has a “Veronica Mars” feel to it. No word on when the show will air, but we presume sometime in 2016, whichfor those keeping score—is a year before Warner Bros. gets their superhero heroine “Wonder Woman” to the big screen.

Update: Marvel confirms ritter, but says the series will arrive in 2015. Here’s the official synopsis.

After a tragic ending to her short-lived Super Hero stint, Jones is rebuilding her personal life and career as a detective who gets pulled into cases involving people with extraordinary abilities in New York City.”

Rosenberg says, “Krysten brings both the hard edge and the vulnerability the role demands. We can’t wait for fans to see her in action, coming to Netflix in 2015.” Marvel’s Head of Television Jeph Loeb said,. “Krysten Ritter has the type of range, spanning the comic to the tragic, that makes for the stuff of the best Marvel heroes. As Jessica Jones, Krysten will bring one of the most beloved new characters of the past decade to life in a way we know will delight her longtime fans and introduce her to many more.”
