‘Fargo’ Tops HitFix’s TV Critics’ Poll; McConaughey Wins for ‘True Detective’

'Fargo' Tops HitFix's TV Critics' Poll; McConaughey Wins for 'True Detective'

While film critics awards are settling into a comfortable rut, TV critics are all over the place. HitFix has just released the results of its annual critics poll, and the winner, for both Best Series and Best New Series, is FX’s “Fargo,” which while it’s made several individual Top 10 lists so far, has not shown anything suggesting that degree of dominance. “Fargo” also took three of the top 10 spots in the performance category, with Allison Tollman in third, Billy Bob Thornton in seventh, and Martin Freeman in tenth. Last year’s acting favorite, Tatiana Maslany, held onto fourth place, but the second season of “Orphan Black” dropped down to 37th place, indicating some major course correction is in order, clone dance party or no.

Outside of “Fargo,” the strongest finish by a new show went to “Transparent”: fourth overall, second in new shows, and second in performance for Jeffrey Tambor’s turn as a transitioning parent of three; “True Detective” finished a place behind in both the overall and new shows lists, though McConaughey won the performance category and Woody Harrelson finished sixth. Its strongest season in years, and maybe ever, wasn’t enough to get “The Walking Dead” higher than 20th place, but there aren’t a lot of questionable shows above it: It’s just been that good a year.
