‘True Detective,’ ‘Orange is the New Black’ & ‘Game of Thrones’ Top WGA Nominations

'True Detective,' 'Orange is the New Black' & 'Game of Thrones' Top WGA Nominations

Take away the lush period look of “Mad Men” or the CGI dragons of “Game of Thrones,” and what are you left with? Some damn good storytelling. That’s the message from today’s announcement of the Writers Guild Award nominees for television and new media.

Of all the predictors for awards glory, the WGA offers a unique perspective on the state of television, with specific categories acknowledging the difficulty of launching a new series or adapting a pre-existing work to the medium.

While there aren’t too many surprises today, episodic recognition was spread pretty evenly across the nominees, with only “Modern Family” pulling off two nominations for comedy scripting. “True Detective” scored nods for Drama Series—rather than for “Long Form Original,” an important distinction for a show mired in controversy—and New Series, though it was passed over for Episodic Drama. “Game of Thrones,” meanwhile, racked up nods for both Drama Series and Episodic Drama, as did “The Good Wife” and “Mad Men.”

On the comedy side, “Silicon Valley” and “Transparent” both nabbed nods for Comedy Series and New Series. Of the Comedy Series nominees, only “Transparent,” “Louie,” and “Orange is the New Black” scored Episodic nods, though “Modern Family” did score two of the latter despite being kept out of the series race. Also of note: “The Simpsons” and “Bob’s Burgers” have the Animation category all to themselves, with the long-running FOX comedy taking four of the six nods to its baby burger’s, er, I mean brother’s, two.

The full list of nominations is below. Winners will be announced at the 2015 Writers Guild Awards on Saturday, February 14, 2015.
