With Will Smith, Tom Hardy, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, Jai Courtney, and Cara Delevingne confirmed for “Suicide Squad” a couple weeks back, you might think there wouldn’t be any major roles left to cast. But there was still at least one more: Amanda Waller, the government official who oversees the titular super villain black ops program. Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Oprah Winfrey were frequently mentioned as contenders/wishlisted actresses for the part, and any one of the trio would’ve brought more prestige to the project.
But according to report from Latino Review, it’s Davis who has bagged the role of the Suicide Squad commander. It’s not 100% just yet, as Davis’ commitment to the hit TV show “How To Get Away With Murder” still has to be sorted out. And while filming on “Batman v. Superman: Dawn Of Justice” has officially wrapped, it was rumored over the summer that the Waller would be popping her head into the movie. And given that nearly a year and a half of post-production time has been given to Zack Snyder‘s film, there’s plenty of opportunity to film one off Easter Eggs teasing “Suicide Squad” which opens just a few months after ‘Batman.’
But otherwise, this is great casting, but now that he has all the talent, can David Ayer bring the cast together in a cohesive whole? “Suicide Squad” arrives on August 5, 2016.
1/6/15 update: Davis has essentially confirmed her role in the movie via Nerd Report.
