Weekend B.O. Dec. 5-7 (Nothing New Here, Move Along)

Weekend B.O. Dec. 5-7 (Nothing New Here, Move Along)

As typical
with the weekend after the Thanksgiving holiday, there was a significant drop in box office figures; but, once again, to absolutely no one’s surprise, “The
Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1″ lead the way, with $21.6 million, and nearly
$258 million so far domestically. At the rate it’s going, the film will easily become
the second largest grossing film in 2014, after “Guardians of the Galaxy.”

As for the
rest of the weekend’s list, it’s pretty much more of the same from the past few
weeks. Coming in second, was Fox/Dreamworks “Penguins of Madagascar,” followed by “Horrible Bosses 2.”

“Big Hero 6,” “Interstellar” and “Dumb and Dumber” followed in that order as expected. Amazingly, “Gone
Girl” is still stuck in 8th place, where it’s been for the past several

The Fox
horror film, “The Pyramid,” which was not screened to the media for obvious
reasons, and got little advance publicity, fizzled at the box office, earning a measly
$1.3 million.

the highly acclaimed Reese Witherspoon drama, “Wild,” grossed  $677,000 playing on just 21
screens in it’s opening limited engagement. With some $30,000 per screen, it had
the second highest per screen average, beaten by only “The Imitation Game,” with Benedict Cumberbatch as the eccentric math
genius and inventor of the modern computer, Alan Turing, which opened on only 8 screens, but has grossed an excellent $1 million to date.
