Directors Guild Nominations Always Yield Surprises: Eastwood In, DuVernay Out

Directors Guild Nominations Always Yield Surprises: Eastwood In, DuVernay Out

These could be the final five directors on Oscar nominations morning Thursday–or not. David Fincher could sneak in for “Gone Girl,” or  “Selma” director Ava DuVernay. At least AMPAS voters got “Selma” screeners, which SAG, the PGA and DGA did not. “American Sniper” on the other hand shows how popular Eastwood really is.

These nominations shows the continuing strength of Fox Searchlight’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel” which won the Best Comedy Golden Globe and “Birdman,” which won Best Actor and screenplay, IFC’s “Boyhood,” which won best Drama, Director and Supporting Actress, and Weinstein Co’s  “The Imitation Game,” which needed this boost for Norway’s Morten Tyldum, a Hollywood outsider. Tyldum, Anderson and Linklater are all first-time DGA nominees.

The winner will be named at the 67th Annual DGA Awards fete on Saturday, February 7, 2015 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Los Angeles.
