Trailer Watch: Ellie Kemper Flees a Doomsday Cult in Tina Fey's 'Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt'

At long last(!), the trailer for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt has been released. It feels like this project has been talked about for ages, so it’s great to finally have a look at what the team behind the brilliant and beloved 30 Rock, Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, have been up to. Also great is the chance to see Ellie Kemper in the spotlight. The Office alum has popped up in a number of supporting roles across TV (The Mindy Project) and film (Sex Tape), but this time the charming comedienne gets to play the leading lady. Kemper is perfectly cast as Kimmy Schmidt‘s titular character, a former doomsday cult member who rebuilds her life in New York City. It’s a charming fish-out-of-water story that has echoes of Enchanted and Elf — but with sassier humor.

The trailer begins by showing us Kimmy pre-liberation, happy among her fellow cult members and singing about the the end of the world (as they know it): “Apocalypse, apocalypse, we caused it with our dumbness.” After spending 15 years in a bunker, Kimmy is freed to start life anew as a nanny for a New York socialite (played by Jane Krakowski in a role that appears to be as bitingly funny as Jenna Maroney). As the title suggests, Kimmy won’t be broken — not by her reputation as one of the Indiana “Mole Women,” the claustrophobic living conditions in a teeny NY apartment, street harassment, or her bizarre fear of velcro. Instead, she is delighted by all that the Big Apple has to offer — and we can’t help but be delighted by her.

Mark your calendars for March 6, which is when the first season of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt will be available to stream on Netflix. A second season has already been confirmed. Netflix is clearly very confident about the success of the series, and we are too.
