Returning to the “ladies kicking ass” spirit of The Heat, Melissa McCarthy will return to the multiplex this spring in Spy as a mousy, unassuming CIA analyst who goes out into the field and takes charge.
It’s nice to see McCarthy showing her range by playing an everywoman this time around — and delightful to witness Spy‘s subtle feminist critiques. The reason why McCarthy’s Susan Cooper is such a great undercover agent is because she’s not instantly conspicuous like Jude Law’s flashy Bond-wannabe or Jason Statham’s blustery, well, Jason Stathamish character. Plus, despite a mishap with a moped, Susan eventually figures out how to knock some heads around.
Written and directed by Bridesmaids director Paul Feig, Spy opens May 22.
