Yesterday was no doubt a joyous day for anyone who heard their name uttered in the wee hours of the morning as the nominations for this year’s Oscars were announced. For those omitted however, the day most likely started on a dour note. For “Force Majeure” director Ruben Östlund –whose film missed out on an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film (it made the shortlist) — the morning was a devastating crush, if the below video of his real-time reaction is to be believed.
Sources tell us that the video, posted on YouTube by the filmmaker’s production company Plattform Produktion, was made in jest. Whether that’s really the case, we’ll let you be the judge. Either way, it makes for one hell of an uncomfortable watch.
UPDATE: Östlund called Indiewire to set the record straight…sort of. He confessed that he and his team were “really hoping” to be nominated and that the video captures an “intense and important moment.” Still, he admitted, “It’s more interesting to watch the loser than it is to watch the winner.”
Was his sad reaction played strictly for laughs? Östlund won’t say. He did reveal that he had a fun time watching the nominees announcement. Östlund also stressed how important it is to have perspective during awards season and that he doesn’t take it all “too seriously.”
