Perhaps one of the strangest, more unfortunate and borderline shocking film industry stories of 2014 was Edgar Wright dropping out of Marvel’s “Ant-Man.” The filmmaker has spent around eight years developing the project, but bowed out basically after Marvel wanted to make the project less like an Edgar Wright film and more like a MCU film (co-star Evangeline Lily recently inadvertently explained why Marvel made it difficult for Wright to stick around). Even stranger was watching the dedicated fan outrage go from “we should boycott this project!” to “this project is now in good hands!” when director Peyton Reed (“Yes Man,” “The Break Up”) took over.
I digress, it is what it is now. Paul Rudd still stars as Ant-Man, Michael Douglas plays Henry Pym, the inventor of the shrinking formula in this version of the movie (and not the original superhero like he is in the comics) and Lily who recently revealed a few more details and said her character Hope Van Dyne “is the daughter of the founders of The Avengers, Ant-Man and the Wasp” which will no doubt lead to lots of confusion as we know from the MCU Ant-Man and The Wasp weren’t in those original movies (she’s referring to what happened in the comics). Strangely enough, the screenplay for the film is credited to Adam McKay (“Anchorman“) and Paul Rudd, which is odd given that at least two other writers were hired for a touch-up (a third is also mentioned here) post McKay’s work on the film, and Rudd’s name was never mentioned previously in conjunction with the screenplay (Wright and Joe Cornish, the original screenwriters, still get a “story by” credit). Anyway, here’s the updated official synopsis.
“The next evolution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe brings a founding member of The Avengers to the big screen for the first time with Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man. Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, master thief Scott Lang must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.”
Starring Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly, Judy Greer, Bobby Cannavale, Michael Pena, Martin Donovan, Wood Harris, John Slattery, Corey Stoll, Gregg Turkington, Abby Ryder Fortson, David Dastmalchian and T.I., Marvel’s “Ant-Man” arrives in theaters July 17, 2015.
