Watch: Top Directors Have More to Talk About Than Awards Buzz

The Best Director Oscar can be a tricky category. It was just two years ago that a film went on to win Best Picture whose director wasn’t even nominated (“Argo”). Only three years before that did a woman take home the prize in the tradition’s 82 years. Many questions still linger in the coming weeks as we await the Academy Award nominations: Will two women, Angelina Jolie and Ava DuVernay, make history by both being nominated? Will veteran director Mike Leigh beat out the “young bucks” in their 40s, like Christopher Nolan or Bennett Miller? Will one director be snubbed while their film gets a nod?
Despite these pressing questions, the director’s of some of the most talked about films of 2014 had other subjects to discuss during their segment of The Hollywood Reporter’s annual roundtable series
Mike Leigh (“Mr. Turner”), Angelina Jolie (“Unbroken”) Richard Linklater (“Boyhood”) Bennett Miller (“Foxcatcher”) Christopher Nolan (“Interstellar”) and Morten Tyldum (“The Imitation Game”) gathered to discuss their inspirations, the horror of watching rough cuts and the toughest days on their shoots. Watch the roundtable in its entirety below:
