Some projects stuck in development hell never get made, or when they do reach the screen after various writers, producers, directors, and more have had put their hands on it, the film hardly resembles what sparked all the heat in the first place. And then, every once in a while, a long brewing project manages to survive years of false starts and put the best foot forward possible. It looks like that’s what’s happening with “Passengers.” Shepherded for years by Keanu Reeves, who at one time was lined up to star alongside Rachel McAdams, the movie is now going ahead with a fresh cast, new director, and it’s pretty first rate all around.
Oscar-nominated “The Imitation Game” helmer Morten Tyldum will direct Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence and fast-rising star Chris Pratt (“Guardians Of The Galaxy,” “Jurassic World“) in the Jon Spaihts (“Prometheus“) penned flick. Not bad, right? Both actors are in talks for the movie, which takes place on an interstellar voyage to a distant planet. However, one passenger wakes up from cryogenic sleep 90 years early and makes the decision to awaken a female passenger, leading to a romance (I dunno, I’d be kinda pissed).
Don’t get too excited — Lawrence’s packed schedule will have to make space for this one, but you can bet Sony will move mountains to make sure they land two of the hottest actors in Hollywood for this promising project. [Variety/THR]
