While the history of video game adaptations is pretty lousy, Hollywood is still trying to strike gold, with a number of expensive, big screen projects on the way. And Netflix, eager to have their hands in whatever pot is hot at the moment, are following suit with the news coming today they’re going to tackle one of the most popular, beloved video game series of all time.
The Wall Street Journal reports that live action series based on the game is in the works, though it’s in early stages at the moment. It’s not the first time the game has been brought to TV, with a brief animated show airing in 1989, but aside from that, the franchise always lived on consoles, computers, and in print. Feature films were mentioned here and there over the years, but nothing gained serious traction. However, Netflix seems to have found a concept that works, pitching the show as a family friendly “Game of Thrones” that will allow audiences to follow Link into the world of Hyrule (Zelda is the name of the princess he has to rescue in the game).
No word yet on actual plot details, or even the creative team involved (they’re searching for a writer), and we’d wager that before they announce anything officially, they want to make sure they have something substantial to tell the die hard fans who will undoubtedly have many opinions about this.
