Nicolas Cage has joined the cast of Oliver Stone’s “Snowden,” which already stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the titular NSA whistleblower, Shailene Woodley, Melissa Leo, Zachary Quinto, Tom Wilkinson, Rhys Ifans, Joely Richardson and Timothy Olyphant.
Cage will play a former U.S. Intelligence Official in this international thriller that has already begun filming in Munich and will continue in various locations around the world until mid-May.
Pathé Films developed the project with Stone’s long-time producing partner Moritz Borman and have retained distribution rights for France and Benelux. Wild Bunch is handling international sales in all other territories, with Open Road Films and Endgame Entertainment partnering for the U.S. release.
Produced by Moritz Borman, Eric Kopeloff and Philip Schulz-Deyle, the film’s script by Kieran Fitzgerald (“The Homesman”) and Stone is based on “The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World’s Most Wanted Many” by Luke Harding and “Time of the Octopus” by Snowden’s Russian lawyer Anatoly Kucherena. “Snowden Files” follows the cyber celebrity from Hawaii to Hong Kong, where he brought earth-shattering surveillance intel to Poitras and Guardian journalist Glenn Greenwald before seeking asylum in Moscow, which is the focus of Kucherena’s thinly fictionalized novel.
The Academy Award-honored creative team includes cinematography Anthony Dod Mantle (“Slumdog Millionaire,” “Antichrist”), production designer Mark Tildesley (“28 Days Later”) and editor Alex Marquez (“Alexander”).
