Set in the mountains of Myanmar, “Golden Kingdom” centers on four young Buddhist monks who must learn to fend for themselves after their teacher embarks on an unaccompanied journey through the mountain pass.
Per the film’s official synopsis, “Golden Kingdom” was shot entirely in Mynmar with non-professional actors. Given the film’s sophisticated imagery and the complicated geopolitical circumstances surrounding production — the country formerly known as Burma only just recently reopened its borders in 2011 to the rest of the world — it’s hard to believe that director Brian Perkins is actually a first-time filmmaker.
