Eyeballs, top hats and tuxedos make up the signature look of the mysterious avant-garde musical collective known as The Residents, who are at the center of a new documentary premiering next month at SXSW.
“The Theory of Obscurity: A Film About The Residents” provides an examination of the band’s 40-year legacy. Documentary filmmaker Don Hardy Jr. received access to The Residents’ archive of material through the band’s management, The Cryptic Corporation, from which the film derives a large portion of its footage. Hardy Jr. also interviewed the likes of Les Claypool and Matt Groening, whose own work has been heavily influenced by The Residents.
