Everything was not awesome when “The Lego Movie” was shut out of the Best Animated Feature category for the Academy Awards. In a similar affront,”Selma” shockingly didn’t earn a nod for director Ava DuVernay nor for David Oyelowo. So both movies were fighting to take home Best Song last night, riding in on hopeful sympathy votes and fantastic performances.
John Legend and Common’s performance of “Glory” was so powerful that many in the audience, such as Oyelowo himself and Chris Pine, were moved to tears. It was an inspiring moment among the other musical performances, which were, for the most part, a bit dull… except for two others, that is.
Tegan & Sara teamed up with The Lonely Island to perform “Everything is Awesome,” in a fun, wacky performance that included Lego Oscars and breakdancing. But probably the most surprising was Lady Gaga’s sincere tribute to the 50th anniversary of “The Sound of Music.” Fans of hers knew she had the pipes to pull those songs off, but that doesn’t mean her serious singing chops weren’t a surprising and welcome moment.
