Best known for dramatic roles in films such as “Mulholland Dr.” and “The Impossible,” Naomi Watts proved her range last year with roles in a pair of high-profile comedies. The Australian actress was a co-recipient of nearly a dozen ensemble prizes for her work in “Birdman,” but she received a lot of individual attention for her brazen supporting turn in the Bill Murray vehicle “St. Vincent.”
In the star-studded “St. Vincent” from director Theodore Melfi, BIll Murray plays an unlikely mentor to the young son of a single mother (played by Melissa McCarthy). The film was nominated for Best Comedy and Best Actor in a Comedy (Murray) at the Golden Globes, while Watts’ performance as Murray’s pregnant Russian prostitute (with a heart of gold) netted awards attention as well.
In the exclusive behind-the-scenes clip below, Watts discusses Harvey Weinstein’s push to get her to “do something different,” what it was like to work with Bill Murray and how she nailed down the physicality of a woman unlike any she has played before. The clip is a part of the “St. Vincent” Blu-ray/DVD set, which is available now.
