If you’re getting that “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” vibe from the first “SPECTRE” image and vlog launch from Solden, Austria, it’s purely intentional. After all, this marks Daniel Craig’s fourth assignment as James Bond and first meeting with Ernst Stavro Blofeld. As “Skyfall” reinforced, it’s about simultaneously looking forward and back by conveying a surreal feeling of deja vu, and Sam Mendes raises the stakes with the return of Bond’s arch-nemesis and sinister organization, mixing the angst of Fleming with a new spin on some of the early franchise tropes.
Production designer Dennis Gassner has found the next best thing to the memorable Piz Gloria from “OHMSS” in this secluded Austrian location, where Bond encounters a character from his past (Christoph Waltz’s Franz Oberhauser) as well as someone who will figure prominently in his future. It’s always personal for Craig’s Bond, who’s continually confronted with trust and betrayal and haunted by the ghost of Vesper.
This time, Gassner evokes the spirit of designer Syd Cain with the ultra-modern-looking, glass Klinik on the mountainside. The scenery is exquisite and the car chase looks very cool. The vlog includes comments from Lea Seydoux (Madeleine Swann), Dave Bautista (Mr. Hinx), Gassner, production manager Martin Joy and associate producer Gregg Wilson.
