Six-time Tony winner Audra McDonald will head back to Broadway in a new musical in 2016.
McDonald will star as stage performer Lottie Gee in a production that looks back at musical-theater history, possibly from a racialized point of view. “Shuffle Along, or, The Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed” dramatizes the behind-the-scenes troubles of the 1921 Broadway hit "Shuffle Along," which counted among its early performers Josephine Baker and Paul Robeson. The jazz musical eventually earned famous fans like George Gershwin, Fanny Brice, and Langston Hughes.
"Shuffle Along" will start previews on March 14, 2016, and open on April 21, 2016, at the Music Box Theater.
