First Lady Michelle Obama Will Make 1st Appearance on 'BLACK GIRLS ROCK!' Televised Awards Special

BET Networks and BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Inc. have announced that First Lady Michelle Obama will make her first appearance on the “BLACK GIRLS ROCK!” Show at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, during which Cicely Tyson (Living Legend Award), Ava DuVernay (Shot Caller Award), Dr. Helene D. Gayle (Social Humanitarian Award), Erykah Badu (Rock Star Award), Nadia Lopez (Change Agent Award) and Jada Pinkett Smith (Star Power Award) will all be honored. 

The televised special celebrates its fifth year honoring the triumphs of inspirational African American women who are trailblazers in the areas of art, philanthropy, sports, and community service. 

Included in Mrs Obama’s appearance will be a speech on the value of education, which is part of the the First Lady’s “Reach Higher” initiative.

Tracee Ellis Ross and Regina King will return to the stage as co-hosts of “BLACK GIRLS ROCK!” for the fourth time – the televised primetime special will air on BET on Easter Sunday, April 5, 2015 at 7 pm/ET.

GIRL celebrants – three audacious teenagers who are using their talent and ingenuity to become pioneers in education. ‘BLACK GIRLS ROCK!’ works fervently year round to develop the leaders of tomorrow through arts education, cultural literacy, technology, and group mentoring programs.
