READ MORE: SXSW: Mark Duplass’ 8 Improvised Tips for Success in the Film Industry
Taking a break from scripting the second season of his delightful HBO series “Togetherness,” indie stalwart Mark Duplass took the mic at SXSW to deliver a stirring keynote address that served as a both a memorable reflection of his navigation of the industry and a call to action for future independent filmmakers.
“I was living in Austin in shitty apartments around town,” Duplass humorously noted. “I was sitting there thinking, ‘I’m inspired, I’m excited, I want to be a filmmaker. I have no connections. Everyone says pick up a camera and do it, but how am I going to get there? What can you do when you’re absolutely nowhere?'”
Over the course of his remaining half-hour presentation, Duplass provided an answer to his question with an improvised eight-point plan based on his experiences. Be sure to watch the full address above.
