Everyone has one of those friends that their other friends instantly fall in love with the minute they meet them. In Academy Award winner Asghar Farhadi’s latest film, that person is Elly.
“About Elly” follows a group of friends on a holiday retreat. The synopsis continues: “With the return of their close friend Ahmad from Germany, a group of former college pals decide to reunite for a weekend outing by the Caspian Sea. The fun starts right away as they quickly catch on to the plan of lively Sepideh, who has brought along Elly, her daughter’s kindergarten teacher, in hopes of setting her up with recently divorced Ahmad. But seemingly trivial lies, which start accumulating from the moment the group arrives at the seashore, suddenly swing round and come back full force when one afternoon Elly suddenly vanishes. Her mysterious disappearance sets in motion a series of deceptions and revelations that threaten to shatter everything they hold dear.”
The film was actually completed long before Farhadi’s Academy Award-winning “A Separation,” which won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival and won Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars. “About Elly” was picked up by Cinema Guild back in the fall, a shocking five years after it had its own premiere at Berlin, where it earned the Silver Bear award.
“About Elly” opens in New York on April 8 and in Los Angeles on May 8, followed by a national release. Take a look at the poster below:
