According to THR, A24 is in final negotiations to take “Amy,” the distributor’s first-ever documentary, for US distribution. A24 is aiming to release the film this summer. Watch the first trailer below.
Directed by Asif Kapadia and produced by James Gay-Rees, the documentary chronicles the many hills and valleys of the British singer/songwriter’s short life and career, with rare archival footage and previously unheard tracks.
Winehouse struggled long and hard with alcohol and drug addiction and died too soon in 2011 at the age of 27. Her second and final studio album, the timeless and soulful “Back to Black,” won her five Grammys in 2006.
Focus Features International first previewed the documentary at Cannes 2013, and the film’s July 3 theatrical release in the UK coincides with the fourth anniversary of Winehouse’s death.
Kapadia previously directed the pulse-pounding Formula One doc “Senna,” earning the filmmaker critical kudos and two BAFTA awards.
