When the movie you directed opens to a $384 million worldwide weekend, Hollywood brings its choicest projects to the table, and it looks like that’s just what’s happening with James Wan. It has been one week since “Furious 7” drove full throttle through the box office, and now Warner Bros. wants to bring Wan’s magic touch to their DC universe.
THR reports that the filmmaker is the frontrunner to helm the Jason Momoa-starring “Aquaman.” There have been conversations but no offer, and this is far from a done deal. The biggest problem might be “Furious 8.” While Wan isn’t expected to return to direct, Universal technically has him on contract, and could put him behind the camera anyway. The other thing is that there still isn’t a finished script, with Will Beall (“Gangster Squad“) and Kurt Johnstad (“300“) writing competing screenplays. And then there is the property itself which is viewed as one of the more challenging to mount.
That said, there is a lot material to play with. “The whole mythology of Aquaman is pretty amazing. There’s so many things to tell, and there’s a whole backstory that’s just amazing. There’s a lot of surprises coming,” Momoa teased to EW earlier this year.
Sound off below. “Aquaman” arrives on July 27th.
