One can’t help but chuckle a little about the geek narrative around “Fantastic Four.” 20th Century Fox and director Josh Trank failed, at least in the minds of the Comic-Con crowd, to deliver anything in San Diego last year, and everyone assumed Fox was hiding the film because it wasn’t any good. Rumors that is was a disaster started simply because no marketing materials had been released yet. That all ended quickly when the marketing manna arrived in February and the fickle fans were finally sated.
Now it appears to be smooth sailing narrative-wise as the core audience seems happy, invested, and eagerly awaiting the film. Here’s the official synopsis:
FANTASTIC FOUR, a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s original and longest-running superhero team, centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy.
Will it be as “Batman Begins” as Trank has touted? We’ll have to wait and see. “Fantastic Four” stars Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell, and Toby Kebbell, and is due in theaters August 7. Meanwhile, Fox has released four new cast featurettes with Trank and co-writer/producer Simon Kinberg discussing the strengths of the various cast members. There’s also a new international trailer that has snippets of the characters in action. Watch ‘em all below.
