The 2015 Tribeca Film Festival has just announced new additions to their program that will take place at the fest’s Spring Studios. The lineup includes DEFCON’s famed hacking conference, Oculus Story Studio’s virtual reality experience, a special event with rapper A$AP Rocky and industry discussions with leading cultural institutions, a.k.a. “Tea Talks.” Spring Pass holders will have the opportunity to interact with immersive multimedia installations and explore unusual virtual realities.
Oculus Story Studio, a team of film and game developers, is all about “immersive cinema,” which allows viewers to step inside and participate in a story. They will showcase a short experience called “Lost,” using the Oculus Rift Crescent Bay prototype. “Lost” takes audiences on a nighttime quest through a forest where an unlikely creature lives. The piece is directed by Oculus Story Studio’s Saschka Unseld, who was also the director of Pixar’s short film “The Blue Umbrella.”
Additionally, music video director Chris Milk has been named the inaugural featured creator at Spring Studios. Milk has directed music vids for Kanye West, U2, Green Day and Arcade Fire. He is also well known for his pioneering interactive projects like “The Wilderness Downtown,” and for his large scale installations. Milk is currently working on virtual reality ventures via his new undertaking, Vrse, with a collective of artists and innovators in the field. A selection of his VR projects will be featured throughout Spring Studios.
