Can you teach an old dog new tricks? In this trailer for Isabel Coixet’s new film “Learning to Drive,” Academy Award nominee Patricia Clarkson plays Wendy, a New York book critic whose husband has left her for a younger woman. “Instead of buying a motorcycle, Daddy decided to give adultery a spin,” Wendy explains to her daughter.
In an effort to become more independent and get back on her feet, Wendy takes driving lessons from the wise and soft-spoken Darwan (Academy Award winner Ben Kingsley). Living in NYC, Wendy never had to learn how to drive — plus her husband always squired her around.
Darwan has problems of his own; he is getting married to a woman from his homeland of India, but he has never met her before. As a friendship blossoms between teacher and student, Wendy graciously gives Darwan tips on how to woo a woman, as he in turn teaches her how to deal with road rage and her now-cynical views on love and marriage.
“I never learned to cook because I thought my mother would always be there to cook for me,” Darwan tells Wendy. “Then there was a half a world between us, so I make my own food.”
“Learning to Drive” will hit theaters on August 21.
