“You suffer from despair,” says Emma Stone’s character in the new trailer for “Irrational Man,” Woody Allen’s latest film. Indeed, Allen’s characters all suffer from despair of one kind or another, the question is how it’s presented and what comes of trying to fix it.
The premise of “Irrational Man” is a predictable one: “A philosophy professor in existential crisis gives his life new purpose when he enters into a relationship with his student.” Stories about professors in relationships with students have been written since the beginning of time, but hopefully Allen can find a fresh take on the subject.
With voice-over narration from its two leads, Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone, “Irrational Man” appears to be an introspective take on the idea of student-teacher privilege. It also appears that Phoenix has managed to absorb some of Allen’s own vocal nuances into his own narration. Check out the trailer to see if you agree.
