Just when you thought John Oliver couldn’t impress his audience even more, he does this. Oliver traveled to Russia for an interview with the infamous Edward Snowden, who leaked classified NSA documents to the media. The interview aired on Sunday’s episode of “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” and the results are above.
The theme of this week’s episode was government surveillance, so it only makes sense for Snowden to be a topic. But Oliver took it one step ahead by traveling to Russia to sit down with Snowden. At first, Oliver didn’t think he’d show. “Why would he?” said Oliver as he paces across the room and waits rather impatiently for Snowden’s arrival. To top it off, Oliver learns that the room he’s interviewing Snowden in is directly overlooking the home of Russia’s Federal Security Bureau. “If the Russian KGB is listening, ring the fire alarm if he’s not coming,” joked Oliver.
However, he does show up for a rather light but informative interview. The two discuss government intelligence, the benefits and drawbacks of spying and what Snowden’s ideal NSA would be like. We also learn just how few people know who Snowden is and whether people believe the government can get access to our dick picks.
