READ MORE: Paolo Sorrentino On His ‘Great Beauty’ Oscar Ride and the Future of Italian Film
Although we have to wait until Thursday to see whether or not Paolo Sorrentino’s “Youth” makes the official Cannes Film Festival lineup, a teaser trailer for the writer-director’s latest project has finally landed, promising yet another character-driven, visually-introspective narrative feature.
Marking Sorrentino’s followup to his Best Foreign Language Oscar winner “The Great Beauty,” “Youth” stars Michael Caine as a retired orchestra conductor on holiday with his daughter (Rachel Weisz) and her film director friend (Paul Dano). While staying at a hotel, the conductor must face the music of his life once more when he receives an invitation from Queen Elizabeth II to perform for Prince Philip’s birthday.
If “The Great Beauty” taught film lovers anything, it’s that Sorrentino knows how to punctuate the souls of aging artists through mood and striking visuals, and it seems “Youth” will continue to emphasize this theme through similar means. Watch the gorgeous teaser above, and stick with Indiewire to see whether or not the film makes the Cannes cut this Thursday.
