The film, directed by, Sara Hirsh Bordo, became one of Kickstarter’s most successful crowd-funded documentary projects of all time and has already won awards at SXSW, Newport Beach and the inaugural Bentonville Film Festival, founded by Geena Davis, where it received the BFF Spirit Award.
The film’s official synopsis reads: “The Lizzie Velasquez Story follows the inspiring journey of 26 year old, 63 pound Lizzie from cyber-bullying victim to anti-bullying activist. Born with a rare syndrome that prevents her from gaining weight, Elizabeth ‘Lizzie’ Velasquez was first bullied as a child in school for looking different and, later online, as a teenager when she discovered a YouTube video labeling her ‘The World’s Ugliest Woman.’ The film chronicles unheard stories and details of Lizzie’s physical and emotional journey up to her multi-million viewed TEDx talk, and follows her journey from motivational speaker to Capitol Hill as she lobbies for the first federal anti-bullying bill.”
“Our festival has always celebrated people who fight to tell their story and aren’t afraid to be themselves. That is true of both Lizzie and the filmmakers of ‘A Brave Heart.’ We think it is the perfect way to close our festival with New York premiere of the movie and celebrate our 5th anniversary!” said Festival Co-Director Tony Castle.
The Lower East Side Film Festival also released to Indiewire the official poster for the fifth iteration of the festival, which you can check out below.
The Lower East Side Film Festival runs from June 11-21. The full lineup will be released shortly
