For all the complaints about “True Detective” being, let’s say, less than great with female representation, one key aspect of the second season seems to be overlooked: Rachel McAdams is going to be a badass. From the first trailer, in which she’s leading a SWAT team, to the new character posters with her decked out in combat gear, McAdams — who came to fame as a romantic lead, not a street fighter — looks like she’s not about to take any guff from you, me or an internet full of bloggers ready to rip into the lack of feminist representations in “True Detective.”
Could she end up being a token female character, weakened by a soft heart and romantically hung up on one of her three male co-stars? Maybe. But so far it appears far more likely she’ll kill ’em than kiss ’em.
In addition to the new posters, HBO has released its own interview with Nic Pizzolatto. It mainly seems to correct any false reports from before (no more “secret occult U.S. transportation system”) and clarify for fans that there’s no connection between Season 1 and Season 2. Perhaps the most exciting bits of news gleaned from the brief interview are, 1) the new season will be told in a linear fashion, rather than jumping back and forth in time like Season 1, and 2) T. Bone Burnett developed original songs for the new season. One was the one heard in the first trailer.
