We’re not big anticipators of Marvel movies around these parts, but this news just changed that considerably with regard to the upcoming “Doctor Strange.”
None other than the high priestess of our hearts, Tilda Swinton, will make her Marvel Universe debut in the film, and it gets even better: She’ll be playing the Tibetan mystic known as the Ancient One — a character that has been a male in the comics its based on. According to reports, the studio had initially been searching for a male actor but decided to rethink the role. All hail that decision, which isn’t the first with regard to Swinton. In “Snowpiercer,” her character Mason was originally. middle-aged man
The Ancient One is a mentor to the titular character, who we already know will be played by Benedict Cumberbatch. She’s over 500 years old, which continues another trend across Swinton’s career (see “Orlando” and “Only Lovers Left Life,” both of which saw Swinton’s character live for centuries). “Doctor Strange” is scheduled for release in November 2016.
