“Clouds of Sils Maria,” now in theaters, melds shades of Bergman’s “Persona” and Cassavetes’ “Opening Night” in depicting the psychological entanglements of three women: Juliette Binoche as a seasoned actress starring in a revival of the play that launched her career, Kristen Stewart as her spiky personal assistant and Chloë Grace Moretz as the much younger protégé costarring in this play. Stewart won a Cesar for this role.
The lines between actor and role begin to blur as desire rears its head. We’re never quite sure what’s a rehearsal, and what’s actual dialogue happening between the characters. All three actresses, Binoche and Stewart especially, deliver sensational performances that feel lived-in and even improvisational.
The Guardian chats with Binoche in the delightful video interview below, in which Binoche charms as always. “For me, I was always aware of ‘How can I avoid any system?’ You need resistance. If you go into a system, it’s brainwashing.”
