“Dope” premiered to rave reviews (and prizes) at the Sundance Film Festival in January, and its pre-release hype is only increasing after its screening in the Directors’ Fortnight section at Cannes.
Here’s the official synopsis: “A critical hit and audience favorite out of the Sundance Film Festival, in ‘Dope,’ Malcolm (Shameik Moore) is carefully surviving life in a tough neighborhood in Los Angeles while juggling college applications, academic interviews, and the SAT. A chance invitation to an underground party leads him into an adventure that could allow him to go from being a geek, to being dope, to ultimately being himself.”
Tony Revolori and Kiersey Clemons star in the film alongside Moore, with Kimberly Elise, A$AP Rocky, Keith Stanfield and Zoë Kravitz also appearing. The film has quite a hip-hop team behind it as well, with Pharrell Williams serving as executive producer and Sean Combs co-executive producing.
“Dope” is set for a theatrical release on June 19.
