Picked up to series and set to premiere this fall, “The Muppets” is a reorientation of the famed children’s franchise for adult audiences. As the official synopsis reads, “‘The Muppets’ return to prime time with a contemporary, documentary-style show that, for the first time ever, will explore the Muppets’ personal lives and relationships, both at home and at work, as well as romances, break-ups, achievements, disappointments, wants and desires; a more adult Muppet show, for kids of all ages.”
If the newly-dropped trailer (posted above) is any indication, the adult “Muppets” promises to be an equally strange and satirical affair. There’s mockumentary satire to boot, not to mention a strong taste for the meta and some awkward romantic tension. So yes, in case you were wondering, Kermit and Miss Piggy are gearing up to be the “Jim and Pam” of 2015.
There is, in fact, a lot going on here. If you’re a fan of the Muppets, this first look should serve as a nice primer for their newest vehicle. But if you’re not, check out the trailer above and see if ABC’s “The Muppets” is, in fact, the mockumentary satire you never thought you needed.
