How do we define our legacies? Where do we even start? The
new trailer for the third season of “Hannibal” doesn’t provide any
clear answers, and maybe it doesn’t need to. Framed around what seems to be a
therapy session between Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) and the eponymous Hannibal
(Mads Mikkelsen), it showcases both the horrifying crimes and the beautiful
cinematography that have created their own legacy for the show.
The most telling section in the trailer occurs near the
beginning, when Hannibal confesses to sometimes shattering a teacup on the
floor in order to see whether it will repair itself. “I’m not satisfied
when it doesn’t gather itself up again,” he says. “Someday perhaps,
the cup will come together.”
The tumultuous events of the second season finale serve as
that metaphorical teacup to Hannibal, who may have fractured his relationships
with the other characters beyond repair. His legacy may always be that
of a villain, but this season will doubtlessly show a different kind of
relationship between Will and Hannibal.
