Amazon Studios Expands Into Marketing and Distribution with Bob Berney Hire

Well-known indie executive Bob Berney is leaving behind his indie Picturehouse distribution company (“Metallica: Through the Never,” “The Guest”) and moving from New York to Los Angeles (where his children Sean and Liam Berney recently joined Fox Searchlight and Universal, respectively), to become Amazon Studios’ Head of Movies Distribution and Marketing. Jeanne Berney will continue to oversee the release of Picturehouse films.

This gives Berney a window into the tech universe and proves that Amazon is serious about taking its films out on multi-platforms –including theatrical. Ted Hope is pushing through an initial roster of about a dozen Amazon Original Movies that will need branding. In Berney’s new role at Amazon, he will oversee the distribution and marketing of those films for theatrical release and early window distribution for Prime members.
Berney has released a wide range of movies into the arthouse market, from “La Vie en Rose,” starring Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard, and Guillermo del Toro’s  “Pan’s Labyrinth” to Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ,” “A Prairie Home Companion,” “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” “Y Tu Mama Tambien” and “Whale Rider.”

Also joining Amazon Studios is Albert Cheng who will serve as Chief Operating Officer under Price.  Albert most recently served as Executive Vice President and Chief Product Officer of Digital Media at Disney ABC Television Group, where he brought Disney and ABC programming to a wide range of digital platforms. In his new role, Cheng will oversee Amazon Studios’ efforts across all business operations and software development.
